A medical convoy run by Assiut University treated 812 people free of charge in El Quseir on Saturday 3 October, according to the news site Elghad.

The convoy was set up at Sheikh Atta Primary School in the town, organised by the university's community service and environmental development sector together with the Hayah Karima (Decent Life) foundation, as part of an initiative called "Anta al-Hayah" — "You Are Life".

Of the total, 612 people were examined by doctors and 200 more were seen by a pharmacy team. Consultations, tests and medicines were provided at no cost to those who qualified. The doctors on the convoy covered six specialties:

  • internal medicine
  • paediatrics
  • orthopaedic surgery
  • chest diseases
  • ear, nose and throat
  • dermatology

The university's faculty of pharmacy sent a separate team working in clinical pharmacy and drug sciences, which dispensed medication free and saw the 200 cases, Elghad reported. Dr Mohamed Abdel Basit, the general coordinator of the convoys, said turnout from El Quseir residents was noticeably high.

The university framed the visit as part of a continuing programme to take its medical services out to areas away from its own campus, and said the convoy work would be expanded with partner organisations.

For residents of El Quseir, a convoy like this is a day on which specialist consultations are available in the town itself rather than at the end of a drive. Elghad's report does not say whether another convoy is scheduled for El Quseir, when one might return, or what the most common complaints were.
