This coast is one of the most reliable wind destinations in the world, and almost everything written about it is written by schools selling lessons — which is why every spot is described as perfect for every level. They are not. Last reviewed 1 August 2026.
The short version
- Learning: Soma Bay for space and genuinely flat water, Mangroovy for the schools and the scene.
- Strong wind, and value for money: Safaga, and it is not close.
- On a budget, or already staying in the city: Hurghada — but choose the centre rather than the city. Wind quality varies more there than anywhere else on the coast.

Mangroovy Beach

Soma Bay lagoon

Safaga and Tobia island
Safaga · Flat with swell outside · All levelsThe coast’s original wind destination — flat water in the lee of a long headland and Tobia island, at prices from a different decade.
Makadi Bay
Makadi · Flat to choppy · ImproverA smaller, calmer alternative to the big spots — fine for learning and for a hotel-based week, not a destination in itself.
Hurghada
Hurghada · Choppy · ImproverWind, schools and cheap lessons in and around the city — less refined than El Gouna, considerably cheaper, and more variable.
