Al-Azhar University Doctors Launch a Free Medical Convoy for Safaga

Doctors from Al-Azhar University have launched a free medical convoy for residents of Safaga, the Red Sea port town south of Hurghada, according to Bawabat Al-Ahram.

Bawabat Dar Al-Maaref carried the same news, describing a free medical convoy in the Red Sea serving the people of Safaga. Both reports were published on 3 September.

Neither report, as carried, gives the detail residents would most want:

• how many days the convoy will operate
• which medical specialities are taking part
• where in Safaga it is based
• how many patients it expects to treat

Free convoys of this kind are one of the main ways specialist care reaches the smaller towns along this coast. Safaga is served by local health facilities, but residents needing a consultant in a narrower field have long travelled to Hurghada or further afield. A visiting university team removes that journey for a few days, which is why these convoys draw large numbers when they are announced locally.

The convoy also arrives during a visibly active period in Red Sea health services. This site has reported the start of GAHAR accreditation work at Hurghada General Hospital, the opening of that hospital's first specialist blood-disorder clinic, and a delicate operation there that saved a patient's foot from amputation.

For Safaga residents the practical point is simple: free consultations are available in the town for a limited window.
