Crews from the Red Sea Water Company are pumping standing water off Hurghada's streets after moderate rain fell on the city on Friday evening, according to Sada El-Balad.
The company says vehicles and equipment were sent to the places where water had pooled as soon as the rain arrived, moving out from standby points it had prepared in advance in the areas it expected to be affected. Operation and maintenance teams were still working in several parts of Hurghada on Saturday morning, pumping water away and clearing what the rain left behind.
Before the storm the company had said it was ready for the change in weather, with teams and equipment held on round-the-clock shifts.
A company official identified as Maj. Gen. Bahaa said the emergency footing remains in place, with the company in contact with the governorate's operations room, the local district units and the holding company. He said the company's hotline runs 24 hours a day to take residents' reports and complaints, which are passed straight to the relevant department.
Sada El-Balad does not give the hotline number, does not say how many streets are affected, and does not say how long the clearance is expected to take.
This site reported on Friday that the rain flooded streets in Hurghada and cut power for about half an hour, and that forecasters had warned of possible flash flooding in Hurghada, Safaga and El Quseir into Saturday.
