Temperatures across Egypt are set to rise by up to two degrees from Friday, 21 August, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has forecast, according to Egypt Independent.

The authority's latest outlook, issued for Cairo and the governorates, describes the coming pattern as:

  • a moderately hot and humid breeze in the early morning
  • extremely hot and humid conditions nationwide through the daytime
  • coastal areas remaining hot and humid

The EMA is the official state forecaster, and its bulletins are the basis for the heat advisories Egyptian authorities issue during the summer.

The forecast as reported does not break the figures down by governorate, so it carries no specific maximum for Hurghada, Marsa Alam or the other Red Sea towns, and it does not say how many days the spike is expected to last.

For the Red Sea coast, the humidity line is the part worth reading twice. Late August is already the tail of the hottest stretch of the year here, and the coast's sea breeze — normally what makes Hurghada and El Gouna feel more bearable than inland Egypt at the same temperature — offers less relief when the air is humid as well as hot.

For visitors, that argues for the ordinary precautions the season calls for: water, shade in the middle of the day, and moving excursions, desert trips and long boat days towards the early morning where the operator allows it. For residents and for anyone working outdoors on the coast, the same two degrees land on top of an already demanding month.
