El Gouna's Second Solar Plant Takes the Town to 15.8 MW and a 15% Renewable Target

El Gouna has opened Solarize-2, its second solar power station, adding 8.6 MW to the 7.2 MW built at Solarize-1 and taking the town's total solar capacity to 15.8 MW, according to an announcement by El Gouna Red Sea, the Orascom Development Egypt destination, carried by Zawya.

The town says the expansion supports its target of generating more than 15 per cent of its local energy supply from renewable sources in 2026, a share it expects to rise as further solar capacity is planned. The station was developed in partnership with SolarizEgypt.

Mohamed Amer, chief executive of El Gouna Red Sea and managing director of Orascom Development Egypt, said sustainability has been part of the town's vision for decades and that Solarize-2 "marks an important step in advancing that vision", describing the partnership as creating "one of Egypt's largest private-sector solar energy initiatives". He said strategic investment would continue across energy, water, waste and mobility.

Yaseen Abd El Ghaffar, founder of SolarizEgypt, said that through Bequest Holding, SolarizEgypt and Desal, more than EGP 1 billion has been invested in El Gouna's green infrastructure, calling the town "a flagship model for sustainable development".

For residents and for visitors staying in El Gouna, the practical point is supply. The town runs its own utilities — power, water, wastewater treatment and reuse, waste and transport are all named in the announcement as parts of the same programme — so capacity built inside El Gouna covers more of its growing demand.

This is a company announcement rather than an independent assessment, and it has limits worth naming: it gives no figure for what the two stations have actually generated, no cost for Solarize-2 on its own, and no date for the next expansion.
