Electricity Minister Presses Orascom to Keep the 900 MW Ras Shukeir Wind Farm on Schedule

Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, has met a delegation from Orascom Construction headed by chief executive Osama Bishai to review progress on the 900 MW Ras Shukeir wind power project, Daily News Egypt reports.
According to the report, the minister stressed the need to adhere to the project's timetable and to take the measures necessary to connect it to the national electricity grid.
Ras Shukeir sits on the Red Sea coast north of Hurghada, inside the Red Sea Governorate, in the Gulf of Suez corridor whose steady northerly winds have made it Egypt's main wind-power belt. At 900 MW the project is one of the larger single generating schemes on this stretch of coast.
The report does not give a completion date, a construction percentage, a cost figure, or a date for grid connection, and it does not say what specifically is holding the timetable up — only that the minister pressed on both points.
For residents of the coast, grid capacity is not an abstraction. Hurghada News has reported this summer on residents in several Hurghada neighbourhoods complaining of repeated power cuts and voltage swings, and on a cable fault that cut supply to parts of Al-Kawthar. A large new generating source feeding the national grid from inside the governorate does not automatically fix local distribution problems, which are a separate layer of the network — but it does change the supply picture the coast draws on, particularly in the peak summer months when demand across Egypt is at its highest.
