Expansion work is under way at Hurghada International Airport's domestic departure and arrival halls, the Egyptian Airports Company says, with the sterile area in the domestic departure hall being widened and passenger routes and service points reorganised as air traffic builds through the winter season.
The company's chairman, Captain Wael El-Nashar, set out the work during an inspection visit to the airport, reported by Veto on 19 October. The tour covered the enlargement of passenger areas, the expansion of the sterile zone in the domestic departure hall, and a reorganisation of movement routes and service points intended to raise the airport's capacity and ease departure and arrival formalities, particularly at peak times.
El-Nashar also inspected the passenger buildings, the check-in areas, the aprons and aircraft stands and the operational facilities, to check that they are ready for current traffic levels and meet security, safety and service standards, the report said.
He stressed that development plans should be tied to actual operational needs and make the best use of the space available, so that passengers keep moving smoothly and the airport keeps running efficiently while the building work goes on.
No completion date, cost or new capacity figure was given for the works. The company's account described work in the domestic departure and arrival halls; it did not mention the international terminals that most visitors to this coast pass through.
