Hurghada Ranks Third for Value in a British Winter-Sun List Topped by Sharm el-Sheikh

A ranking published by the British newspaper The Sun put Sharm el-Sheikh first for value for money on a winter sun holiday with 72 points, Cape Verde's Sal second with 66 and Hurghada third with 62, scored from holiday prices advertised on the On the Beach booking platform alongside temperatures and flight and hotel costs, Al-Masry Al-Youm reports.

Hurghada has been placed third in a British ranking of the best-value destinations for a sunny winter holiday, with 62 points, behind Sharm el-Sheikh on 72 and the Cape Verdean island of Sal on 66. The Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm reported the placings, summarising a list published by the British newspaper The Sun.

The list, headlined as the ten cheapest destinations for winter sun, was built from an analysis by a travel expert using holiday prices advertised through the On the Beach booking platform, taking in temperatures, flight and hotel prices and how many deals were available, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

What the ranking says, and what it does not

  • It is a comparison of prices and weather drawn from one booking platform, not an official measure of quality or of visitor numbers.
  • The report gives only the first three places and their scores, so the other seven destinations on the list are not identified.
  • The report does not say when The Sun published the list.

Al-Masry Al-Youm attributes Hurghada's showing to its range of accommodation, its beach resorts, its diving and watersports and boat trips to nearby islands such as Giftun, and notes that the city also serves as a base for local markets and restaurants, desert safaris and programmes that combine a beach stay with a visit to Luxor.

For Sharm el-Sheikh the report cites winter temperatures of around 24 degrees Celsius. It gives no figure for Hurghada, describing the weather here only as relatively mild.

The report names the Canary Islands, Dubai, Agadir, Cyprus, Cape Verde, Madeira, Malta and Antalya among the other destinations competing for European travellers who travel for winter sun.
