Madkour Projects has come in with the lowest-priced offer to build Marsa Alam's new electricity substation, the Egyptian energy trade paper Power News reported on 6 October, in a report by Walid El-Behnasawy.
The specification given is detailed:
- a 220/66/22 kV substation
- capacity of 2×175 plus 3×40 MVA
- gas-insulated (GIS) type
- tendered under a single-envelope system
Hurghada News reported on 4 October that bids for this substation were due to be opened on Tuesday. This is the outcome of that opening.
What the report does not carry is the money. There is no bid value, no figure for the competing offers, no construction timetable and no award date. A lowest price is also not the same as a signed contract: Power News describes the offer as the cheapest among those competing, not as a decision.
It is the second substation tender on this coast in a week. This site reported on 4 October that bids to build a Safaga electricity substation came in at 963 million pounds, and on 2 October that Hurghada residents were complaining of repeated power cuts and swinging voltage.
For residents of Marsa Alam, this is procurement rather than power: nothing changes on the network until the station is built. For visitors it has no bearing on this winter season.
