Inspectors in Marsa Alam have destroyed quantities of food found unfit for human consumption during rounds of shops, restaurants and commercial premises across the town, the Egyptian news portal Dar Al-Maaref reported. The report does not say when the round took place.
The seizures included poultry, bags of mozzarella, cooked cheese and tins of cheese, as well as 16 kilogrammes of pickles that did not meet health requirements. The food was destroyed immediately and legal steps were taken over it, according to the report.
What the round covered
- Whether premises held the licences required for their trade.
- How food was being stored and handled.
- Teams from the city's follow-up department and its patrol and oversight committee, together with the engineering, supply and veterinary departments and the National Food Safety Authority.
The head of Marsa Alam city, Major General Yasser Mohanna El-Deminy, who led the round, said periodic and unannounced inspections of commercial and food premises would continue and that violations touching public health would not be tolerated. The round followed instructions from the Red Sea governor, Dr Walid El-Borei, to step up market oversight.
The report names none of the premises involved and mentions no fines.
