Rain with thunder fell over El Quseir on Sunday, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported, as unstable weather moved across the south-east of the country and the Red Sea mountain range.
Red Sea Governorate asked drivers to take particular care on the fast roads, above all those linking the coast's towns to the Upper Egypt governorates, and to keep away from flood channels, wadi beds and low-lying ground where rainwater collects.
The Egyptian Meteorological Authority expects a low-pressure system and a broad rainy spell from Sunday through Wednesday. Satellite images show thunderclouds over parts of the southern Red Sea mountains, near Ras Banas and Abu Ramad, with rain of varying intensity, and intermittent rain is expected over Halayeb and Shalatin.
The authority says the spell could lead to flash floods. It expects the conditions to begin on Sunday evening and continue into Monday over the Red Sea region, South Sinai and Upper Egypt, and has warned of thunderstorms with lightning and downdrafts, with a particular focus on South Sinai, the Red Sea mountain range, Aswan and the south of Upper Egypt.
The daily report of the Water Resources Research Institute, which the governorate is following, puts rain of light to heavy intensity over the south-east of the Eastern Desert and the Red Sea's eastern coast on Sunday. On Monday it expects rain to continue over the mountain chain and the Halayeb and Shalatin areas, with light rain possible over the northern Eastern Desert.
The governorate has raised its state of readiness for the 24–26 October period, and says the control room of the national emergency and public safety network is tracking the situation and coordinating with the bodies involved.
