Rain reached parts of the southern Red Sea Governorate on Sunday, and no flooding on roads had been reported by Sunday evening.

Moderate rain fell at kilometre 80 of the El-Shazly road inside Marsa Alam's area, and heavy rain continued over Shalatin with thunder, lightning and hail. No water had collected on roads up to the time of the governorate's evening monitoring session.

In El Quseir the rain was light and lasted only a few minutes, the governorate's operations room said, and did not affect roads in the governorate.

Heavy rain also fell on wadis around Halayeb and Shalatin, among them Wadi Houdein at Shalatin.

Red Sea governor Walid El-Barqi followed the weather on Sunday evening from the control centre of the national emergency and public safety network at the governorate headquarters. Satellite images showed low and medium cloud still building over the south and centre of the governorate, with chances of thundery rain of varying intensity and active downdrafts.

Executive bodies remain on raised readiness and monitoring continues around the clock, with attention to highways, mountain areas and flood channels. The Red Sea water and wastewater company has stepped up preparations to pump rainwater out of city areas, and the governorate has repeated its advice to take care in mountain areas and wadis and to keep away from flood channels.

For Monday, forecasters put the chance of light to moderate, sometimes thundery rain at about 40% over parts of the Red Sea Governorate, and said it could reach flash-flood level at Halayeb, Shalatin, Ras Banas, Marsa Alam and El Quseir at intervals. Water Resources Research Institute reports had flagged rain of varying intensity over the Red Sea mountain ranges and the Halayeb and Shalatin areas from 24 to 26 October.
