Ras Ghareb's Al-Amal Health Unit Reopens After a 7-Million-Pound Upgrade, With Emergency Room, Dentist and Vaccinations

The Al-Amal health unit in Ras Ghareb has reopened after a refurbishment costing 7 million Egyptian pounds, Red Sea governor Walid El-Barqi said at the opening, according to Sada El-Balad. The governorate says the unit serves around 60,000 people in the town.

The work was carried out with the Red Sea Health Affairs Directorate and took about 60 days, on a site of 800 square metres.

According to the report, the upgrade covered:

• the emergency department
• the dental clinic
• the family medicine clinic
• the pharmacy
• the vaccination department
• family development and family counselling services
• the doctors' accommodation

El-Barqi said raising the standard of health services is a priority for the governorate, and called on companies operating in the Red Sea to help fund service projects that meet residents' needs directly. Ismail El-Araby, director of the Red Sea Health Affairs Directorate, said the refurbishment strengthens primary care in Ras Ghareb by bringing a range of medical and preventive services together in one upgraded building.

Sada El-Balad did not name a contractor, give opening hours for the individual clinics, say how many staff the unit has, or state whether it stayed open during the 60 days of work.

The practical point for the town is that emergency care, dentistry, family medicine, a pharmacy and childhood vaccinations are now all listed as running at one address serving roughly 60,000 residents. Hurghada News reported this week that seasonal flu jabs are being offered at five Red Sea health units, from Hurghada to Shalateen.
