The Red Sea governor has approved a EGP 14.8 billion investment plan covering 223 projects across the governorate, with an expansion of desalination stations and social housing named as top priorities, according to Sada El Balad.

The report did not break down how the funds will be split between the two priorities, name which coastal towns will see projects first, or give a completion timeline.

The announcement lands amid a summer of persistent water strain on the coast. Hurghada and neighbouring Ras Ghareb have spent weeks pressing the government over a shortage, the governor has already capped water prices at EGP 140 a cubic metre with a EGP 100,000 fine for violators, and a new desalination plant north of Hurghada rated at 10,000 cubic metres a day is already under way. The new 223-project package appears to sit within that same push to add supply as tourism-driven demand keeps climbing.

For residents, the social-housing component is the more immediate unknown — no details yet on unit numbers, locations or eligibility. For now, the governorate has put a large figure and a project count on the table without the specifics that would let residents know when or where the work actually lands near them.
