Residents Say Repairs on the Qift–El Quseir Road Are 'Not a Final Solution', Al-Masry Al-Youm Reports

Maintenance work is under way on the Qift–El Quseir desert road, but residents say it amounts to patching rather than a lasting repair, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm, which reported from the route on 7 September.

The newspaper says it went out to survey the maintenance after the Transport Ministry denied that the road had deteriorated. Residents told the paper that "patching is not a final solution" — their verdict on repairs they say cover damaged stretches without rebuilding them.

The visit follows the Roads and Bridges Authority's public denial, reported here earlier, that the Qift–El Quseir road was in poor condition. The authority said at the time that work on the route was continuing and that the upgrade was running to schedule.

The road matters well beyond the two towns at either end. It is one of the main desert links between the Nile Valley around Qena and the Red Sea coast at El Quseir, carrying freight, intercity buses and the day-trip traffic that moves visitors between Luxor's monuments and the coast's resorts and dive centres. Surface condition on the desert roads inland is a standing complaint among the drivers who use them.

What the report does not settle is the detail. The account gives no cost figure for the current work, names no contractor, does not say which stretches are being resurfaced, and sets no completion date. The residents quoted are not identified.

For people living in El Quseir and for visitors travelling overland between the coast and Upper Egypt, the practical position is unchanged for now: the road is being worked on, but neither the scale of the repair nor the date it will be finished is on the record, and drivers should expect maintenance activity along the route.
