Safaga's local unit has begun applying a residential waste collection system in the Mubarak Buildings area, as part of a cleaning drive that removed about 140 tonnes of rubbish and accumulated waste from the town.

The campaigns covered Al-Ashghal, Safaga El-Balad and the Eastern Housing district, where solid waste and tree cuttings were cleared and taken in full to the public dump using the contracted company's equipment, Al-Ahram Gate reported on 15 October. The work follows instructions from Red Sea Governor Dr Walid Abdel-Azim El-Barki, with field follow-up by the head of Safaga city, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Abul-Hagag Dongol.

The aim of starting collection at the Mubarak blocks is to cut the piles of household waste building up between the buildings.

The head of the city said daily follow-up would continue so that the cleaning system runs regularly, and asked residents to throw rubbish only in the places set aside for it.
