El Gouna or Soma Bay?
The coast’s two upmarket options, priced similarly for entirely different reasons: a town with a social life, or a peninsula with almost nobody on it.
If you are spending at the top of this coast’s range, these are the two realistic choices. They cost about the same and offer opposite experiences.
The prices are similar and the reasons for them are opposite. El Gouna is expensive because it is a town with competition, a marina, a restaurant scene and a property market; Soma Bay is expensive because it is a handful of upmarket resorts on a private peninsula with nothing nearby to undercut them.
That difference decides almost everything downstream. In El Gouna your week is shaped by what you choose to do each evening; in Soma Bay it is shaped by the hotel you picked in advance, because there is no second option within walking distance and a taxi anywhere is a real journey.

Divers who hate boat days

The drop-off is right there. Very few places on this coast can say that.
A group with mixed interests
El Gouna
More ways for different people to have a good day without a car.
A long stay or remote work
El Gouna
A town with cafés, other people, and something to do on a Tuesday. Soma Bay is a fortnight, not a season.
Wind is the quiet variable between these two. Both are windier than the sheltered bays south of Hurghada, which is why both have kitesurfing worth the name — and it is also why a still, hot afternoon by the pool is rarer here than the brochures suggest. If you are choosing for sunbathing rather than watersports, the bays around Makadi and Sahl Hasheesh are calmer.
