Hurghada or Dahab?
A resort coast against a Sinai backpacker town. Both are Egyptian Red Sea diving, and almost nothing else about them is alike.
Again, plainly: Dahab is in Sinai and we do not cover it. This entry exists because the comparison is asked constantly and pretending otherwise helps nobody.
Hurghada is a large mainland resort city with an international airport in town. Dahab is a small, low-rise Bedouin town on the Gulf of Aqaba that has been a travellers’ destination for decades and has never quite been developed. The two attract almost opposite people.
Side by side
Feel
Even- Hurghada
- — A working city built around package tourism
- Dahab
- — Low-key, barefoot, camps and cushions on the seafront
Diving
Even- Hurghada
- — Boat diving, the northern wrecks, the widest choice of centres
- Dahab
- — Shore diving — the Blue Hole, the Canyon, walk-in sites
Freediving
Dahab ↑- Hurghada
- — Available, not a scene
- Dahab
- — One of the world’s major freediving centres
Cost
Dahab ↑- Hurghada
- — Cheap by resort standards
- Dahab
- — Cheaper still for long stays, and built for them
Getting there
Hurghada ↑- Hurghada
- — Fly straight into HRG, transfer measured in minutes
- Dahab
- — Fly to Sharm, then roughly an hour and a half by road
Families with young children
Hurghada ↑- Hurghada
- — Resorts, pools, kids clubs, shallow sandy beaches
- Dahab
- — Rocky entries, few facilities, not built for it
Staying a month
Dahab ↑- Hurghada
- — Possible but the town is not designed for it
- Dahab
- — Exactly what Dahab is for — long stays, remote work, freedive courses
Day trips inland
Even- Hurghada
- — Luxor and Cairo are reachable by road
- Dahab
- — St Catherine’s and Mount Sinai are close; the Nile is not
So which one?
A one-week family package holiday
Hurghada
Everything about it is set up for this, from the transfer time to the all-inclusive board. Dahab would be hard work with small children.
Learning to freedive
Dahab
Not close. The Blue Hole and the schools around it are one of the sport’s global centres.
Wreck diving
Hurghada
The Thistlegorm, the Abu Nuhas reef wrecks and the Rosalie Moller are all reachable from the mainland coast.
Two months with a laptop and a dive kit
Dahab
Cheap long-stay accommodation, walk-in diving, and a resident community of people doing exactly that.
A first trip to Egypt, wanting to see the country too
Hurghada
Being on the mainland means Luxor is a long day trip rather than a separate flight.
Divers who have done both usually describe the split the same way: Hurghada is where you go to dive a lot of different things from a boat, Dahab is where you go to dive the same few things properly, on foot, for a long time.
