Hurghada or Marsa Alam?
North or south: convenience, choice and a city, against better reefs, clearer water and considerably more driving.
This is the real decision for anyone whose holiday is mostly about the sea. Marsa Alam came to tourism decades later than Hurghada, and that lateness is exactly why its reefs are in better condition.
What you trade is everything on land. Marsa Alam is not a town in any useful sense — it is a hundred kilometres of coast road with hotels strung along it.
Side by side
Reef condition
Marsa Alam ↑- Hurghada
- — Heavily used, particularly around Giftun. Still good, visibly busier
- Marsa Alam
- — Markedly better. Clearer water, healthier coral, fewer boats
Shore snorkelling
Marsa Alam ↑- Hurghada
- — Limited — most good snorkelling is a boat trip
- Marsa Alam
- — Excellent. Abu Dabbab and Marsa Mubarak have turtles from the beach
Big animals
Marsa Alam ↑- Hurghada
- — Dolphins on day trips, occasional turtles
- Marsa Alam
- — Dugongs, turtles, and oceanic whitetips at Elphinstone in season
Transfers
Hurghada ↑- Hurghada
- — Airport is in the city — 10 to 30 minutes
- Marsa Alam
- — RMF is 60km north of the town; transfers run 20 minutes to well over an hour
Anything to do on land
Hurghada ↑- Hurghada
- — A whole city — markets, restaurants, nightlife, shops
- Marsa Alam
- — Very little outside hotels; Port Ghalib marina is the exception
Flight choice
Hurghada ↑- Hurghada
- — Many airlines, many routes, cheaper fares
- Marsa Alam
- — Fewer routes, more charter-dependent, often pricier
Cost on the ground
Hurghada ↑- Hurghada
- — Cheapest on the coast
- Marsa Alam
- — Moderate — and excursions cost more because distances are longer
So which one?
Serious divers
Marsa Alam
The best diving in Egypt, and it is not a close call. Elphinstone, the Brothers by liveaboard, and house reefs worth diving on their own.
Snorkellers who want to see something big
Marsa Alam
Nowhere else in Egypt gives you a realistic chance of a dugong from a beach entry.
A first Red Sea trip, or a short one
Hurghada
A week loses less to transfers, flights are cheaper and more frequent, and if the sea disappoints there is a city to fall back on.
Families with young children
Hurghada or its bays
Shorter transfers, water parks, and far more hotels built around children. Marsa Alam’s appeal is mostly underwater.
Anyone who gets restless in a resort
Hurghada
Marsa Alam has nowhere to escape to. That is the whole point of it, and it is not for everyone.
