The two names that come up when the trip is really about diving. One is a quiet southern coastline with wildlife; the other is a developed resort city next to a legendary national park.
As with our Hurghada and Sharm comparison, we should say plainly what we are: we cover the mainland Red Sea coast, not Sinai. What follows is an honest read of a question divers ask constantly, not a neutral referee’s verdict.
These two are more different than their reputations suggest. Sharm is a full resort city with nightlife, malls and a large airport, sitting beside Ras Mohammed and the Straits of Tiran. Marsa Alam is a long, thinly developed coast where the attraction is what is in the water and how little else there is.
A dedicated dive trip with big-animal hopes

Dugongs, turtles and oceanic dolphins are the south’s advantage, and house-reef diving means you are not dependent on a boat schedule.

The house reefs are shallow, alive and reachable from the sand — which is a rarer thing than it sounds.
We cover Marsa Alam properly and Sharm not at all, so weight the Sinai column accordingly. Both are excellent; the honest split is that Sharm is the better holiday and Marsa Alam is the better dive.
