Cairo and the pyramids
Giza, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum — by road it is a punishing day, and by plane it is a genuinely good one.
How long it really takes
By road, 18–20 hours door to door with roughly 12 of them in a vehicle. By air, 12–14 hours and civilised. The difference between these two options is the whole decision.
Cairo is about 450km from Hurghada. The road trip leaves around midnight, gets you to Giza mid-morning, allows a few hours across the pyramids and a museum, and returns you after midnight. People do it and people regret it.
The flown version — a short domestic hop each way with a guide and driver meeting you — costs considerably more and turns an ordeal into a day trip. If Cairo is on your list and your budget can absorb it, this is the one place on this coast where paying more genuinely changes the experience rather than the packaging.
On the ground the fixed points are the Giza plateau, the Sphinx, and either the Grand Egyptian Museum or the older Egyptian Museum in Tahrir depending on the operator. Ask which — they are very different experiences.
Is it worth it?
By air, yes. By road, only if the pyramids are the reason you came to Egypt and there is no other way to see them.
Skip it if
- You are considering the road version with children. Do not
- You have fewer than seven days — the recovery day is real
- You would rather see Luxor, which is closer, quieter and arguably more rewarding
What it costs, and how
The road trip is priced similarly to a Luxor day. The flight version is several times that and is a different product. Beware anything advertised as "Cairo by plane" at close to coach prices — check whether the flight is actually included both ways.
Watch out for
- Camel and horse touts on the Giza plateau are persistent and the agreed price is rarely the final one. Fix everything before you get on.
- Confirm which museum is included. The Grand Egyptian Museum and the Tahrir one are not interchangeable.
- Photography rules and ticketing inside the pyramids change; entry to the interior of the Great Pyramid is a separate ticket and limited.
