Also known as Dolphin House
A horseshoe reef north of Hurghada with a resident pod of spinner dolphins — the coast’s most likely dolphin encounter, and an easy dive in its own right.
Shaab El Erg is a large horseshoe-shaped reef north of Hurghada, easiest to reach from El Gouna. The lagoon inside is shallow and sandy with coral pinnacles rising through it, which makes for relaxed, well-lit diving with straightforward navigation.
Its fame comes from the spinner dolphins that use the lagoon. They are genuinely resident in the area, but they are wild and they come and go, and the honest framing is that you are diving a good easy reef with a decent chance of dolphins rather than booking a dolphin encounter.
How your boat behaves around the pod is the thing worth asking about before you book. The difference between a good and a bad operator here is visible in the water.
This is planning information, not a dive briefing or a substitute for one. Conditions change; your guide on the day is the authority. Diving emergency numbers and the coast’s recompression chambers are on our emergency contacts page.
