How to have working data the hour you land — and the one Egyptian rule that catches people out.
Four operators cover the country. All four have desks at Hurghada International (HRG) and shops in Hurghada and El Gouna.
- Can I buy a SIM card at Hurghada airport?
- Yes. The main Egyptian operators — Vodafone, Orange, e& (Etisalat) and WE — have desks in the arrivals area at Hurghada International (HRG), and airport desks generally keep long hours to meet incoming flights. Airport pricing tends to be higher than in town, so if you are staying a while it can be worth buying a starter pack at the airport and topping up later at an operator shop in Hurghada or El Gouna.
- Do I need my passport to buy an Egyptian SIM card?
- Yes. Egypt requires physical SIM cards to be registered to an identity document, so the vendor will take your passport and register the line in your name. Bring the passport itself rather than a photocopy — the entry stamp or visa is usually part of the check.
- Is an eSIM a better option for Egypt?
- For short trips, often yes. International eSIMs are bought and activated online before you fly, sit outside the local passport-registration process, and work the moment you land — no queue, no paperwork. The trade-off is cost per gigabyte, which is usually higher than a local prepaid plan, and you will not get an Egyptian phone number. For a week or two of maps, messaging and the occasional call over the internet, an eSIM is the simpler choice; for a longer stay or if you need a local number for deliveries and bookings, a local SIM wins.
- Which network has the best coverage on the Red Sea coast?
- Along the developed coastal strip — El Gouna, Hurghada, the bays, Safaga and around Marsa Alam — all four operators generally work. Coverage differences show up away from the road: in the desert, on dive boats offshore and on the drive south past El Quseir. Vodafone is the one most often recommended for reach outside built-up areas. Expect signal to disappear entirely on offshore trips.
- Is WhatsApp calling blocked in Egypt?
- WhatsApp messaging works normally. Voice and video calling over the internet (WhatsApp, Messenger, FaceTime) has historically been restricted on Egyptian networks and may not connect reliably; text, photos and voice notes are unaffected. Behaviour varies by network and over time, so test early in your trip rather than relying on it for something important.
