The coldest month, which on this coast still means short sleeves at midday — and the sea is warmer than most European summers.

January is when the coast is at its most comfortable to walk around and its least comfortable to lie still in. Midday is pleasant, mornings and evenings are genuinely cool, and anyone picturing a winter-sun beach holiday should pack a fleece for after sunset.
The sea holds around 22°C, which is swimmable for most people and cold for a long snorkel — this is the month a shorty wetsuit stops being optional if you plan to be in the water for an hour.
For anything on land — the desert, Luxor, walking around El Dahar — it is the best month of the year. Everything that is punishing in August is simply pleasant now.

In the water
Visibility is at its annual best — the water is cold, clear and empty of plankton, and thirty metres is normal. At around 22°C a 5mm suit is the sensible choice for repetitive diving and a shorty is the minimum for an hour of snorkelling. Dolphins are around all year and are, if anything, easier to find in the quiet months.
How long the days are
About ten and a half hours of light, the shortest of the year. First light is late and it is dark by early evening, so a full-day boat trip is genuinely a full day and the desert sunset comes before dinner rather than after it.
The catch
Wind. A cold northerly can shut down boat trips for days at a time, and it is the one month where a week of bad luck can mean no diving at all. Book flexible, and do not plan the whole trip around one offshore site.
Or the month either side
February is the same month with slightly less wind and slightly more people. If you want this weather with a warmer sea, wait for March, which is barely warmer in the air and noticeably kinder in the water. Nothing about January is a compromise except the sea temperature and the risk of a blown-out week.
