Egypt's National Telecom Regulatory Authority has instructed fixed-line internet providers to double the data allowance on their base package from 50GB to 100GB while keeping the price at 150 Egyptian pounds. The change takes effect on 1 November.

That package was introduced in May at the same price for households with lighter use. Residents on this coast who subscribe to it are covered by the instruction in the same way as subscribers elsewhere in Egypt.

The authority's chief executive, Mohamed Shamroukh, said the step aims to let families reach good-quality telecoms services at an affordable cost. An unnamed industry source quoted in the reporting said providers have been told to apply the larger allowance with no new fees of any kind.

The regulator said it would continue monitoring how providers carry out the instruction.
