Safaga's Power Substation Is Set for Expansion, With a 963-Million-Pound Bid in the Lead

A consortium of two Egyptian electrical contractors has submitted the lowest bid in the tender to expand the 22/66/11 kV Safaga substation, according to the business daily Al Borsa and other Egyptian outlets.

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company has opened the financial envelopes for limited tender number 3/2026/2027, and the joint offer from Qara for Energy Projects and Investment and the Egyptian Electrical Projects Company, known as Hydelico, came in at the lowest price, Al Borsa reported. Including VAT, the consortium's offer breaks down as:

• 963.15 million Egyptian pounds for the local component
• 2.604 million US dollars for the foreign component

The project's construction works cover the 66 kV low-voltage equipment of the conventional, air-insulated (AIS) type. They do not include supplying the main transformers.

Nothing is settled. Al Borsa said the technical and financial offers are still being studied and given a final evaluation by the transmission company's committees, with the final financial analysis and the formal award decision still to come. The reports give no start date, no completion date, and no figure for how much extra capacity the expansion would add to the grid around Safaga.

The same consortium recently signed contracts worth 875 million pounds plus 15 million dollars to connect wind projects in the Gulf of Suez to the national grid, according to Al Borsa.

For Safaga, it is one more piece of heavy infrastructure in the pipeline, alongside the new desalination plant that will make four times as much water as the town's existing one and the industrial zone starting at the shipyard.
