El Gouna or Hurghada?
Twenty-five kilometres apart and almost opposite propositions: a built resort town where everything works and costs more, or a real Egyptian city that is cheaper, louder and far more itself.
These two get compared constantly because they share an airport and almost nothing else. The drive between them takes half an hour and crosses a genuine divide: El Gouna was designed, Hurghada grew.
The choice is not really about quality. Both have excellent hotels and both sit on the same sea. It is about how much friction you want between you and the country you have flown to.

More choice, far lower prices, and the airport is in town. Budget for the hassle as a cost of entry and learn to say no pleasantly.
A quiet, easy week with good food and no friction
El Gouna
This is precisely what it was built for, and it does it better than anywhere else on the coast. Accept that you are paying for it.
Divers doing day boats
Hurghada
Most centres, most departures, shortest boat rides, lowest prices. El Gouna adds travel time to every dive day.
Kitesurfing
El Gouna
Not close. Mangroovy, the schools and the whole scene are here.
Working remotely for a month
El Gouna
Cafés, coworking, a resident foreign community and things that stay open out of season. Hurghada is cheaper but harder to build a routine in.
Wanting to actually see Egypt
Hurghada
El Gouna is a lovely place that could be almost anywhere. El Dahar could not.
You do not strictly have to choose. They are half an hour apart, taxis are cheap, and a week in one with an evening in the other is a very common and sensible plan.
