Also known as Big Giftun and Small Giftun
Hurghada’s house reefs: a cluster of sheltered sites in a protected area, where most of the coast’s divers make their first Red Sea dive.
The Giftun islands sit directly off Hurghada and are the reason the town became a diving destination at all. The sites around them are shallow, sheltered and reliable, which makes them ideal for training, check dives and anyone new to the Red Sea.
Experienced divers sometimes dismiss them as beginner reefs, which undersells the outer sites: the drop-offs on the seaward side hold good coral and reasonable numbers of larger fish.
The islands are within a protected area and the fees fund that protection. A centre that includes the fee in the price without mentioning it is not overcharging you — it is a real cost of diving here.
This is planning information, not a dive briefing or a substitute for one. Conditions change; your guide on the day is the authority. Diving emergency numbers and the coast’s recompression chambers are on our emergency contacts page.
