Air Cairo wants Hurghada airport to take on a bigger role as an additional hub connecting international destinations, the airline's chairman, Hussein Sherif, told a panel at the Antalya Tourism Fair in Turkey, held from 26 to 28 October. He gave no routes, dates or capacity for it.
Sherif said developing the airline's connectivity network and using Egypt's geographic position were central to its competitiveness, and that Air Cairo is studying what additional connecting hubs could offer for moving passengers between markets.
The route changes set out around the fair do not involve Hurghada. The airline said it had started twice-weekly Istanbul–Sharm El Sheikh flights on Mondays and Thursdays from 26 October, and would add two weekly Cairo–Istanbul flights from 28 December, taking that route to nine a week.
Sherif also pointed to Safaga's natural assets as a base for medical and wellness tourism, saying that would require stronger medical services, suitable accommodation and better infrastructure.
The airline is expanding in Africa at the same time. It flies to Zanzibar, Nairobi and Mombasa, and Sherif said it plans to add Libreville, Windhoek and Yaoundé and to resume flights to Dakar and Lagos.
