A medical team at El Quseir Specialist Hospital has removed a stage-three cancerous tumour from the left colon of a 74-year-old man, in what the hospital describes as the first operation of its kind there.
The patient came in with symptoms and was operated on after tests. The exploratory abdominal surgery took about four hours, and the surgeons removed the tumour together with the surrounding tissue and the lymph nodes serving the affected area. He then spent two days in intensive care before moving to a ward, and left the hospital to convalesce at home.
The team was led by Dr Ahmed Thabet Badri El-Gabali, a consultant in general surgery, oncology surgery and endoscopy, with the hospital's anaesthesia and intensive care staff and its blood bank supporting the operation.
The hospital says the result widens the cancer surgery it can offer, letting people in El Quseir and the towns around it be treated without travelling to hospitals outside the governorate.
The doctors urged anyone with persistent constipation, a marked change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss or rectal bleeding to get checked, through the general surgery and digestive endoscopy clinic at El Quseir Specialist Hospital.
