Egypt's Local Development and Environment Minister, Manal Awad, said the "Green Hurghada" programme aims to cut carbon emissions, improve waste management at hotel facilities, expand renewable energy and protect the coral reefs and biodiversity of the Red Sea's cities.
Awad and Red Sea governor Walid El Barqi are presenting the programme at the WTM London 2026 travel fair in the British capital, described in the reporting as drawing more than 46,000 participants and 5,500 senior international buyers in travel and tourism.
El Barqi said the governorate is holding meetings with major tour operators and European and British airlines to encourage responsible eco-tourism, and is seeking investment in clean energy and climate-friendly transport as well as more charter flights from its main markets. The reporting sets out aims rather than measures already in force, and gives no timetable, budget or regulatory detail.
