The hospital says the clinic is the first in the Red Sea governorate. It runs from 3pm to 5pm on both days and covers chronic disease follow-up, memory problems and medication reviews.

Hurghada General Hospital has announced a geriatric medicine clinic, which it says is the first of its kind in the Red Sea governorate.

The clinic sees patients on Saturdays and Wednesdays, from 3pm to 5pm, according to the hospital.

Hospital director Ahmed Abdel Ghani said the service starts with a full assessment of the patient's health, then follows chronic conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart and kidney disease.

What the clinic covers

  • Memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer's disease
  • Depression and sleep disorders
  • Osteoporosis, joint pain and muscle weakness
  • Movement and balance problems, and preventing falls and fractures
  • Malnutrition, weight loss and general frailty
  • Incontinence, constipation and other digestive complaints
  • Follow-up after a stroke, a fracture or a stay in hospital

The clinic also reviews the medicines a patient is already taking, to catch drug interactions and prescriptions that are no longer medically needed. It advises families and carers on day-to-day care as well.

Consultations are given by Basma Abdel Aziz Youssef, who holds a master's degree in geriatric medicine from Ain Shams University.

Ismail El-Araby, the health ministry's undersecretary for the Red Sea, said widening specialist services of this kind is one of the governorate's health priorities.
