Safaga's local authorities have handed over a 40,000-square-metre plot for a new central hospital, and preliminary procedures for the project have begun.
The site lies in the western tourist-hinterland subdivision area. The land was handed to the committee responsible for the project, with representatives of the Red Sea health affairs directorate and Safaga's health administration taking part alongside the local unit's engineering and urban planning officials.
Brigadier General Mohamed El-Banna, head of Safaga city, called the handover an important step towards building the hospital and said coordination with the relevant bodies would continue in order to complete the studies and the technical and administrative requirements.
He said the planned hospital is intended to serve residents of Safaga and the surrounding areas and to add to the capacity of existing health facilities.
The handover follows instructions from Red Sea governor Walid Abdel-Azim El-Barqi to expand health facilities in the governorate's cities and to provide land for medical projects.
The reporting gives no construction start date, bed number or budget for the hospital.
