Competition in Egypt's national fishing championship opened on Thursday morning in Hurghada, in a tournament staged from 4 to 7 November.
Fourteen clubs and bodies have entered, each fielding five anglers alongside an observer from the Egyptian Fishing Federation. Besides Makadi and El Gouna Sporting, the field includes clubs from Alexandria, Heliopolis and Maadi.
The federation counts the championship among the qualifiers for the world clubs championship, which is set for El Gouna in June 2027. El Gouna is also due to host the fishing World Cup in 2028.
Hisham Farid, a federation board member who heads its technical committee, said women and juniors are competing, and that a team listing juniors gains five points while one listing women gains three.
Mohamed Youssef, head of Egypt's protected areas, attended the opening and pointed to cooperation between the federation and the Environment Ministry on marine life in the Red Sea.
