The government is to direct 10.4 billion Egyptian pounds of public investment into the Red Sea Governorate, with 812 million pounds of it going to raising the capacity of Safaga port, the business daily Al-Mal reported on Tuesday.
The rest of the package covers housing services, drinking water and sanitation, road upgrades, and electricity, health and pre-university education services across the governorate, according to Al-Mal, which cited a government statement.
Safaga has been the subject of repeated announcements this month: Hurghada News has reported a Safaga–Duba ferry to Saudi Arabia being prepared, three boat factories planned on 50,000 square metres, and a 30,000-cubic-metre-a-day desalination plant for the town.
Al-Mal did not report start dates, contractors, or a project-by-project breakdown of the spending, and gave no timetable for the port work.
