1.5 Tons of Watermelon, 15 Chefs: Hurghada's Hotels Celebrate World Watermelon Day
Hotels across Hurghada marked 3 August with carving shows, watermelon cake and fresh juice for hundreds of guests — the latest in the resorts' year-round fruit festival tradition.

Hurghada's hotels found a suitably juicy way to mark World Watermelon Day on Monday: a string of "watermelon festivals" that went through a tonne and a half of the fruit, prepared by around 15 professional chefs for hundreds of guests from Egypt and abroad.
On the menu
- Fresh slices and chilled juices, the summer classics
- Watermelon cake — yes, that exists
- Live fruit-carving shows, with chefs sculpting figures out of whole melons while guests took photos
Taha Mosaad, manager of one of the participating hotels, said seasonal fruit festivals are a tradition the resorts keep up all year round, with summer the peak season for both domestic and international guests. Chef Mohamed Abbas said the carving stations drew the biggest crowds, with guests queueing for photos with the sculpted melons.
The excuse, for the record
World Watermelon Day falls on 3 August each year, and nutritionists rate the fruit an ideal summer choice — low in calories, high in vitamins and antioxidants, and mostly water at a time of year when Hurghada needs exactly that. With daytime temperatures around 40°C this week, the hotels' timing was impeccable.
