Transport union wants tighter safety checks on Cairo–Hurghada buses

The General Union for Transport Workers says inspections should verify driving hours, rest periods and a qualified relief driver on long routes, not just licences and paperwork.

Egypt's General Union for Workers in Transport, Communications and Tourist Vehicles has called for tighter oversight of the companies running long-distance passenger buses, naming the Cairo–Hurghada service in both directions.

In its statement the union put the question directly: "Before you ask about the cause of accidents, ask: where is the relief driver?" It said a driver should not be treated as someone able to keep going without stopping, and that fatigue and lost concentration call for preventive measures rather than a reaction after a disaster.

Inspections should confirm that safety requirements are actually applied, the union said, not simply that licences and documents are in order. It asked for:

  • more traffic and inspection campaigns on passenger lines, beginning with the long routes
  • checks on driving hours and the rest periods drivers are entitled to
  • a qualified standby driver on trips where the rules require one
  • legal action where violations are found

No company is named in the statement and it carries no inspection figures. These are the union's demands: the source records no change to the rules now in force, and no response from the transport companies or the authorities.
