A surgical team at Hurghada General Hospital has fixed a comminuted fracture at the top of the femur in a 76-year-old woman whose heart muscle was working at no more than 36 per cent, leaving anaesthesia a serious risk.

The fracture was stabilised with an interlocking intramedullary nail in under 30 minutes, chosen to cut her time under anaesthetic and limit complications. The hospital says she improved afterwards and can walk well; it named the orthopaedic consultant Shenouda Ragy and the anaesthesia consultant Mahmoud Maher among the team.
