The governorate and the health directorate say the two operations were the first in the hospital's history, work that until now meant patients travelling to Cairo or another governorate.

Hurghada General Hospital has carried out the first two open-heart operations in its history, the Red Sea governorate and the health directorate announced on 4 November.
The surgical team was led by Hassan El-Sisi, professor of cardiothoracic surgery and head of the hospital's cardiothoracic department, with a surgical specialist, an anaesthetist and a nursing team.
Ismail El-Araby, the health ministry's undersecretary in the Red Sea, said the two operations show that teams in government hospitals can carry out advanced surgery, and that the directorate will keep equipping specialist departments. Governor Walid El-Barqi said expanding advanced specialties is meant to spare residents the journey to other governorates for treatment.
The statements do not say when the operations took place, or whether open-heart surgery is now routinely available at the hospital.
