The Red Sea drinking water and sanitation company has stepped up its readiness to pump rainwater out of built-up areas, after Red Sea Governor Walid El-Barqi ordered a higher state of alert for the spell of bad weather forecasters had warned about.
Heavy scattered rain with lightning and thunder has fallen over mountainous areas around Halayeb and Shalatin, in the far south of the governorate. El Quseir had a few minutes of light rain on Sunday, which the governorate's operations room said did not last long and did not affect roads.
For Monday the Egyptian Meteorological Authority puts the chance of light to moderate, sometimes thundery rain over parts of the Red Sea Governorate at about 40%, and says it could become heavy enough to reach flash-flood level at intervals at El Quseir, Marsa Alam, Ras Banas, Shalatin and Halayeb.
Thunderclouds can also bring lightning strikes and strong downdraft winds, which the authority puts at about a 20% chance.
Monday highs are forecast at 31°C in Hurghada, Safaga and Marsa Alam, with lows of 22–23°C.
In the southern mountain valleys the rain was welcomed, particularly by herders, who expect grazing to spread afterwards.
