Safaga Launches Crackdown on Illegal Electrical Connections to Protect Residents

Safaga's electricity engineering department, working with the city's local unit, has carried out what Sada El-Balad describes as an intensive campaign against illegal electrical connections in several of the town's newly built residential subdivisions.

The Egyptian outlet reported on 27 July that the campaign was ordered by Red Sea Governor Walid Abdel-Azim El-Barqi and supervised by Major General Ahmed Abul-Hajjaj Danqal, the head of Safaga city, and framed it as part of the governorate's effort to safeguard residents.

Teams set out to identify and remove connections that Sada El-Balad said pose a direct danger to lives and property. The sweep turned up a number of makeshift connections and wiring practices that met neither the technical specifications nor the safety standards required.

Legal measures were taken against those responsible and the seized material was confiscated, according to the report. Officials repeated that no unauthorised or non-compliant connection would be tolerated, citing the risk of electrocution and of fire.

Sada El-Balad reported that the campaigns will continue in the period ahead across different areas of the city, with immediate legal action wherever violations are found.

The report did not say how many connections were removed, name the subdivisions involved, or give any figure for the penalties applied.
