A purpose-built lagoon town 25km north of Hurghada — the coast’s most polished address, and the least Egyptian-feeling place on it.
El Gouna is not a town that grew — it was built, from 1989 onwards, on a stretch of empty coast by the Egyptian developer Orascom. That origin explains almost everything about it: the islands and lagoons are dug, the architecture is coordinated, the streets are swept, and the whole place is organised into distinct districts rather than sprawling.
Practically, you will spend your time in three of them. Abu Tig Marina is the waterfront strip of restaurants, bars and moored boats, and it is where the evenings happen — the town’s year-round cinema is here too. Downtown, around Tamr Henna square, is the more local-feeling centre with cheaper food. The rest is residential and hotel islands, connected by a bus and tuk-tuk network that runs late and costs very little.
It has become the coast’s centre of gravity for people who are not on a week’s package: remote workers, Cairo weekenders, kitesurfers, and a substantial resident foreign community. That gives it a year-round pulse the resort bays entirely lack.
Suits you if
- ✓Anyone who wants to walk out of a hotel and find somewhere to go without a taxi
- ✓Kitesurfers — Mangroovy beach is one of the best-known launches in the country
- ✓Remote workers and longer stays, for the cafés, coworking and the fact that things are open
- ✓Couples and groups who want restaurants and a bar scene rather than an all-inclusive buffet
Probably not if
- ×Anyone hoping for Egypt as it is lived. El Gouna is a curated environment and does not pretend otherwise
- ×Tight budgets — it is the most expensive stretch of this coast by a clear margin
- ×Divers chasing the big offshore sites, which are far better reached from further south
The practical shape of it
- Getting there
- Hurghada International (HRG), about 25–35 minutes by road depending on traffic through Hurghada. It is the shortest useful transfer on the coast.
- Beach and sea
- The beaches are man-made and shelve gently, which is good for children and unexciting for snorkellers. The reef life close to shore is thin compared with the southern bays; the good sites are a boat ride out. Wind is a feature, not a bug — it is what makes the kitesurfing, and what makes lying on a lounger in the afternoon less restful than you might imagine.
- Evenings
- The strongest restaurant and bar scene between Hurghada and the Sudanese border, and it is not close. Abu Tig Marina carries the volume; Downtown is cheaper and more relaxed. Alcohol is straightforwardly available. Most places stay open year-round rather than closing out of season.
- What it costs
- The most expensive town on the coast. Expect Cairo prices or above for food and drink, and considerably more than Hurghada for the same hotel standard.
- When to come
- October to May is the comfortable window. July and August are very hot but the town keeps functioning. The Film Festival in October and Sandbox in May both fill the place and lift prices.
The catch
It is expensive, and it is a bubble. Some people arrive expecting Egypt and find a well-run resort town where almost everyone speaks English and the prices are European; others arrive wanting exactly that and are delighted. Neither reaction is wrong — but know which one you are before you book a fortnight.
Nearby
- Hurghada, 25km south — for the airport, the bazaar, and everything El Gouna deliberately does not have
- Shaab El Erg (“Dolphin House”) reef, about an hour out by boat
- The desert immediately inland, for quad and safari trips that leave from town
Diving from El Gouna
- Shaab El Erg · Beginner · A horseshoe reef north of Hurghada with a resident pod of spinner dolphins
