Hurghada

The coast’s real city — biggest, cheapest, busiest, and the one place here that exists for reasons other than tourism.

Hurghada is the only place on this stretch that is a city rather than a resort. Roughly a quarter of a million people live here, and it runs on fishing, trade and tourism in that historical order. That means it has the things resorts do not — hospitals, banks, hardware shops, actual neighbourhoods — and also the things resorts protect you from.

It divides into three parts that feel like different towns. El Dahar in the north is the old quarter: the bazaar, the cheap food, the mosque, the buses to Cairo. Sekalla in the middle is the busy, slightly frayed tourist strip. Further south along the coast is the newer hotel corridor, plus the marina, which has become the polished evening destination.

Because it is the arrival point for the whole northern coast, Hurghada is also where you go when something needs solving — a pharmacy at midnight, a phone repair, a visa question, a dentist.

Suits you if

  • First trips to the Red Sea, and anyone booking on price
  • Divers doing day boats — the widest choice of centres and the shortest boat rides to Giftun
  • People who want to eat somewhere different every night without it costing much
  • Longer stays and residents, for the simple reason that everything exists here

Probably not if

  • Anyone who finds street hassle wearing. It is the most persistent here of anywhere on the coast
  • Quiet-seekers — this is the loud option
  • Travellers expecting resort polish outside the resorts themselves

The practical shape of it

Getting there
Hurghada International (HRG) is inside the city. Most transfers are 10–30 minutes, which is as good as it gets on this coast.
Beach and sea
Public beaches in town are functional rather than beautiful, and many of the good ones are attached to hotels or charge entry. The real swimming and snorkelling is offshore: the Giftun islands sit a short boat ride out and carry most of the region’s day-trip traffic. Marine park fees apply and are worth paying attention to — they fund the protection.
Evenings
The widest range on the coast at every price point, from koshary counters in El Dahar to the marina’s waterfront restaurants. This is the one town where you can eat genuinely local food easily and cheaply. Nightlife runs later and louder than anywhere else here.
What it costs
The cheapest base on the coast, often by a lot. It is also the easiest place to overpay if you do not check a price before agreeing to it.
When to come
October to April is the comfortable stretch. Summer is severe — July and August regularly sit above 40°C — though the city does not slow down.

The catch

The hassle is real and it is constant in the tourist areas: taxis, shops, boat touts. It is rarely threatening and it does wear people down. Learning to say no pleasantly and walk on is the single skill that changes a Hurghada trip, and nobody tells you that before you arrive.

  • El Gouna, 25km north, for a different evening entirely
  • Luxor, roughly 4 hours by road — long, but doable as a very early start

Diving from Hurghada

  • Careless Reef · Intermediate · Two pinnacles north-east of Giftun with a dramatic drop-off, long known for moray eels and for currents that decide the dive plan.
  • Sha’ab Abu Nuhas · Intermediate · A shallow reef at the mouth of the Gulf of Suez that has claimed at least four ships
  • SS Thistlegorm · Advanced · A British armed merchant ship sunk by air attack in 1941, still holding its wartime cargo of motorcycles, trucks and rifles. Widely considered one of the best wreck dives in the world.
  • Giftun Islands · Beginner · Hurghada’s house reefs: a cluster of sheltered sites in a protected area, where most of the coast’s divers make their first Red Sea dive.

Wrecks

  • SS Thistlegorm

    A British war freighter still loaded with the equipment of an army that never received it — motorcycles, trucks, rifles and two railway locomotives — and the best-known wreck dive in the world outside Truk Lagoon.

  • Giannis D

    The most photographed wreck at Abu Nuhas, and the most disorienting: the whole stern section lies canted hard over, so every corridor inside it runs at an angle your inner ear refuses to accept.

  • SS Carnatic

    A Victorian P&O steamer that has been on the reef since 1869, so thoroughly colonised that her ribs now read as architecture rather than as a ship. The oldest wreck dived on this coast.

  • Chrisoula K

    The one carrying Italian floor tiles, still stacked in the holds forty years later. The shallowest and most forgiving wreck at Abu Nuhas, and the one novice wreck divers should meet first.

  • Kimon M

    Carrying lentils from Turkey to India when she hit the reef in 1978. The deepest and least visited of the Abu Nuhas wrecks, because she sits where the weather does.

  • Rosalie Moller

    The Thistlegorm’s forgotten sister in the same story: bombed by the same squadron two nights later, sunk in the same anchorage, and left almost perfectly intact in 50m — which is why almost nobody sees her.

    Wind, schools and cheap lessons in and around the city — less refined than El Gouna, considerably cheaper, and more variable.

  • Luxor in a day

    Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the Colossi of Memnon, reached by a four-hour drive each way. The most rewarding thing you can do from this coast, and the most exhausting.

  • Cairo and the pyramids

    Giza, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum — by road it is a punishing day, and by plane it is a genuinely good one.

  • Giftun island boat day

    The standard Hurghada day out — two or three snorkel stops and a few hours on an island beach, inside a protected area.

  • Desert safari and quad biking

    Quad bikes into the Eastern Desert, usually with a Bedouin camp, a camel and a sunset. Enormous fun or a dusty conveyor belt, depending entirely on the operator.

  • Dolphin House

    A boat trip to Shaab El Erg, a horseshoe reef with a resident spinner dolphin pod — a good easy snorkel with a genuine but uncertain chance of dolphins.

  • Orange Bay and Paradise Island

    The beach-club end of the island day — white sand, shallow turquoise water, sun loungers and a bar. Less about the reef, more about the photograph.

Three Egyptian Men Drown in Sava River Near Zagreb, Croatian Police Say

Croatian police recovered the bodies of three Egyptian men from the Sava River at Rugvica, east of Zagreb, on 21 July. The youngest, aged 21, was swept away first and the other two went in after him. Egypt's embassy says the bodies will be repatriated once autopsies and legal procedures are complete.
